Sparks and Flames

This KS1 series of Art lessons will ignite your class’s imagination as they create pieces of art themed around The Great Fire of London. They will use chalks, paints, collage and mixed media over the course of the lessons as they create fiery art. Containing detailed lesson plans, slides, differentiated activities ideas, lots of helpful instructions and a range of engaging printable resources, this five-lesson Art scheme contains everything you need to deliver these fun and creative lessons.

A Knowledge Organiser is available to support the learning in this scheme. It is included in the Complete Series download or can be purchased individually.

 

Lesson 1: The light in the dark

The first lesson in this five-lesson series focuses on using chalks to recreate flames. Your class will be encouraged to look closely at the colours they can see and use skills like blending to develop their work. They create their own building silhouettes to complete their pictures and use the language of foreground and background when talking about their work.

Lesson 2: The colour of fire

During the second lesson in this series, your class will create tissue paper collages. They will examine a painting of The Great Fire of London and hear a description of it. They will use the painting and description as inspiration when creating their own pictures. The children will either layer tissue paper or roll it to create their collages.

Lesson 3: Immense Inferno

During the third lesson in this ‘Sparks and Flames’ art series of lessons your class will use a variety of materials to create models of buildings. They will make choices about the materials and techniques they use as they add 3-D flames to their buildings.

Lesson 4: Looking through the arches

Your class will use a painting of The Great Fire of London as a stimulus for their layered picture. They will think about the foreground, middle ground and background of the picture before constructing their own. They will sponge paint and develop their fine motor skills as they cut and glue.

Lesson 5: Putting out the fire

Your children will be able to add details using paints, pens and pencils as well as develop their fine motor skills as they cut and glue.
