Andy Goldsworthy

Get creative with this set of five Andy Goldsworthy Art lessons for KS1! Your class will think about the colours, materials and shapes Goldsworthy uses in his art work. They will examine several of his sculptures and use them as inspiration for their own creations!

Lesson 1: Colours and Materials

During the first lesson in this series, your class will be introduced to the work of Andy Goldsworthy. They will think about the materials he uses, the shapes he makes and how he arranges colours. The children can then practically sort objects by colour and record their sorting by taking photographs.

Lesson 2: Walls and Paths

Now that your class are aware of the materials, colours and shapes Andy Goldsworthy uses for his art work, they will look in more detail at his sculptures of paths and walls. They will build their own paths and walls using a variety of materials and then evaluate their work.

Lesson 3: Circles and Spirals

In this lesson your class will explore Andy Goldsworthy’s work with circles and spirals. They will recreate some of his pieces of work either through collaging or painting. When they have completed their task they can then compare their work and the work of their peers to Goldsworthy’s, thinking about the similarities and differences between them.
